On July 5 Stacy and I had the honour of not only attending but also designing a bouquet and floral crown for the commitment ceremony of our dear friend and colleague Rio and her partner Brian. It was a boho hippy chic backyard fete with so many fabulous details that this designer had stars in her eyes. Some of my favourites were the vintage “Love Shack” camper, the naked cake, Rio’s perfect lace dress from Le Chateau, baskets of crocheted blankets for after the sun went down, and the uber fab Oast Beer all staged by Ms. Rio herself. Oh and another fabulous thing about that day is that I FINALLY got to meet Stacey Hayward!
So what, you may ask, is a commitment ceremony? In Rio and Brian’s case it was a simple yet beautiful celebration of their love. They are not the kind of people who wanted to spend a lot of money on a wedding and really are not “paperwork and fancy ring kinda people” and opted to visit their local tattoo artist and have each other’s initials permanently etched on their ring fingers. There was no official “I now pronounce you husband and wife”, just the smiles on people’s face when they walked up the driving to see a big SURPRISE written in chalk on the driveway.
I had a great time at this beautiful fete and wished I could have stayed all night.
